Uppsala - a brief history and main sights of the Swedish city

The Swedish city of Uppsala is located about 70 km from the capital of the country, so it had the opportunity to develop well and perform administrative functions. The city itself is part of a larger agglomeration on both sides of the Firisan River. Another environmental advantage of the city is its partial location in the Uppsalaasen hills and about 8 km from Lake Melar. This location makes Uppsala an attractive tourist destination.

History
The beginning of the city has not been determined, but certainly settlements in these areas took place before our era. The village was then called Gamla Uppsala and was the property of the Vikings. Uppsala was not only the main settlement, but also the seat of government and a place of religious worship at that time, the location of the mythical "golden temple". According to the beliefs of the Viking kings, every 10 years they held a ceremony here, offering sacrifices to the gods. The 12th century brought Christianity and church construction, and after a fire it was decided to build the current cathedral in the former town of Aros. The demand for educated priests led to the creation of the university, which was then expanded by Gustav Vasa. A royal castle was also built at that time, which, unfortunately, largely burned down in the early 17th century.

Monuments
The Swedish city of Uppsala is not without its historical atmosphere. The university building dates back to the 15th century, and there are many world-famous museums inside, including the world's only coin cabinet. Another unusual historical site worth seeing is, of course, the Protestant cathedral, built in Gothic and Neo-Gothic style, which currently serves as the cathedral church of the Archbishops of Uppsala, a local parish and the national shrine of the Kingdom of Sweden. The cathedral is the largest religious monument in Sweden. It is 118.7 m long and 45 m wide. Each of the two western towers has a height of 118 meters. The cathedral has been the coronation site for many kings and queens of Sweden. Coronations were held here from the Middle Ages to the end of the 17th century.

Other attractions
In addition to the two most important historical buildings in the city, you can also visit other places related to history. There are, for example, several significant museums, such as the Uppalanna Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, the Museum of the History of Medicine, the unusual Museum of Peace, which presents exhibitions related to past wars and works to create world peace, as well as the famous Gustavianum Museum.
